(Also worth noting is that, at this writing, the location is wrong. It's west of PA36. Well marked from PA227 west of Pleasantville.)

Peaceful piece of history. Hard to imagine that only Pittsburgh & Philadelphia handled more mail than Pithole did for its 15000 residents during its brief existence.

Quiet and mysterious little locale. Quite an unassuming place considering what it was like 150 years ago.

Very unique place. Be sure to watch the introduction movie and get the tour.

Interesting.history that was never taught in school.

What's important about Pithole is what it represents. They found oil (long before cars existed), they pumped the place dry in a year, then moved on to drill for oil elsewhere. Pithole has no oil anymore, and there's precious little left everywhere else in Pennsylvania oil country. Everyplace we've drilled, we've pumped all or most of the oil out. We're fast running out of elsewheres, in PA, in the USA, in the Middle East, on the planet as a whole. Pithole might not be much to look at, but it teaches us that once the oil's gone, it's gone.
